Diabetic Disease

Diabetic Retinopathy: Similar to other organs such as the kidney and nervous system. Diabetes can occlude blood vessels in the eye.

This can lead to blood vessels leaking causing swelling and visual dysfunction if the macula is involved or the retina can grow new blood vessels which leak and bleed and in worst case scenario cause retinal detachments.

Treatment involves optimisation of glucose and vascular risk control but may also require intervention such as laser, intravitreal injections or surgery.
